A T-money card in Korea is most useful when you understand three separate costs: the card itself, the transport balance you add, and any fee for returning unused value. This guide focuses on the standard physical card. Mobile products and special tourist cards can follow different rules.

Buy the card and load usable value
Tmoney’s foreigner guide lists convenience stores such as GS25, CU, 7-Eleven and Emart24 among top-up locations. Ask whether the outlet currently sells the card you want as well as providing reloads. A listing of subway top-up machines does not guarantee that every station sells every card design.
Check the card price and the amount loaded as two separate figures. A receipt showing a card purchase is not proof of a travel balance. Before leaving the counter, confirm that the value you intended to load is available for your first ride.
Physical-card top-up: the official cash method
The issuer instructs visitors to present their card and Korean-won cash at top-up locations. Its guide specifies 1,000-won increments and a top-up range of 1,000–90,000 won per transaction. Follow the machine or counter instructions and keep the card in place until completion is confirmed.
For a first reload, choose enough for the next part of your trip rather than loading all your remaining cash without a reason. The device display or receipt is the place to confirm success. If a transaction fails, check whether value was added or cash returned before immediately repeating it.
Can I use a foreign credit card?
Do not treat every mention of card acceptance as support for every T-money reload. Buying a card, buying a single-journey ticket, loading a different transport pass, funding a mobile product and reloading a standard physical card are separate transactions.
Apple says a South Korea-issued card is required for Tmoney purchases or top-ups inside Apple Wallet. That statement concerns Wallet itself; an app offering a separate tourist flow needs its own current supported-card and fee check. Do not assume an overseas Visa will work simply because another visitor used a different card in another app.
Check balance before entering transport
Use the balance display available during a supported transaction or ask at the top-up counter. Confirm that you are reading the correct card. With a combined product, a shopping balance may be separate from the transport balance.
Keep your card easy to reach without placing several payment cards together on the reader. Follow the local entry and exit instructions for the service you use. If a gate rejects a tap, read the message or ask staff instead of trying several unrelated cards at once.
Refund unused physical-card value
The issuer’s guide says refunds are paid in Korean won, exclude the card purchase price and carry a 500-won service fee. Counter limits and the procedure for partial refunds matter, so ask a supported location whether it can handle your balance before making a special trip.
Plan this before the final airport journey. A refund that leaves the card without enough travel value can create another reload task. Keep an alternative payment method and distinguish the amount returned from the cost of the physical card you retain.
A simple first-day routine
Buy the card, confirm purchase price, add a modest transport balance, check it, then keep the receipt until the first journey is complete. Save the location where you can reload near your accommodation. Carrying a workable cash reload option can prevent a payment-method problem from interrupting the day.
If you also want a prepaid shop-payment function, compare the exact integrated product rather than buying a second card automatically.
